Gilda Radner born as Gilda Susan Radner on June 28th, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, USA was one of the finest comediennes of her time.
Gilda Radner was born to legal secretary Henrietta nee Dworkin and her businessman-husband Herman Radner. She had an older brother named Michael Radner. Gilda was brought up by her nanny Elizabeth Clementine Gillies, who she fondly called 'Dibby'. Gilda Radner attended Broadway plays in her childhood along with her father who ran a Seville Hotel in Detroit, which was frequented by actors and performers. Unfortunately her father died when she was twelve. Yet her dreams to become an actress have not diminished.
Gilda Radner who studied at the University of Michigan began her career as the weather girl for her college radio station WCBN. A year later, she moved to Canada along with her boyfriend Jeff Rubinoff, a Canadian sculptor. There she made her debut with Toronto's Legendary Production "Godspell" in 1972 that has been staged from May 26th, 1972 to September 3rd, 1972 co-starring Eugene Levy, Victor Garber, Andrea Martin, and Martin Short.
Gilda made her on-screen debut with the film "The Last Detail" in 1973. During 1973 to 1975 Gilda appeared on the National Lampoon Radio Hour, a comedy program syndicated to over 600 radio stations. But her biggest break came in 1975 with "Saturday Night Live" show, in which she appeared in 107 episodes from 1975 to 1980. Gilda won an Emmy Award in 1978 and further received two more Emmy nominations in 1977 and 1979 for her Outstanding Performance on "Saturday Night Live" [107 episodes: 1975-1980]. She has also received Emmy nomination in 1988 for her show "It's Garry Shandling's Show" {1988}. On June 27th, 2003 she received the Star on the Walk of Fame Television posthumously at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard.
Gilda Radner was married to lead guitarist & musician George Edward Smith from 1980 to until her divorce in 1982. She later married actor Gene Wilder on September 18th, 1984 and remained married to him until death parted them in 1989.
Gilda Radner died at the age of 42 from ovarian cancer on May 20th, 1989. Her funeral was held at Connecticut on May 24th, 1989 and was interred at Long Ridge Union Cemetery in Stamford. Inscribed on her gravestone were the words: Gilda Radner Wilder - Comedienne - Ballerina 1946-1989.
